How long do full mouth dental implants last?
-
Why do All-on-4® dental implant costs differ so much?
All-on-4® costs vary because of several factors including the skill, training and experience of the dentist placing your implants; and person designing your new teeth; the quality of teeth and dental implants; and treatment plan inclusions.
1. Skill, training and experience of the dentist
General dentists Dr David Norcross and Dr David O'Dowling have restricted their practice to restoring smiles with dental implants and have completed extensive advanced training in implant and restorative dentistry. Both dentists also lead clinical education courses in advanced implant dentistry, helping dentists further develop their skills and expertise in implant treatment.
2. Skill, training and experience of the dental technician
All of our full mouth implant bridges are custom-designed by highly experienced dental technicians. Perth Dental Implant Centre uses a local lab and onsite lab to design full mouth bridges that are high in quality, durability and aesthetics that complement your face, age and personality.
3. The type and quality of replacement teeth
Our dental implant packages offer a number of teeth replacement options and materials to suit your aesthetic and financial needs. Replacement teeth materials have different strengths, durability, aesthetic features and longevity.
4. Type and quality of dental implants
Perth Dental Implant Centre can place any implant system you choose. However, for full arch replacement we offer pricing packages using two high quality implant systems: Nobel BioCare and Southern Implants.
5. Treatment plan inclusions
All treatment plans include clinical radiographs and review appointments at two and four weeks after treatment. If you choose to upgrade your teeth after 3 to 4 months of your mouth healing post-surgery, we’ll include this item in your treatment plan.

How long does a dental implant last?
A dental implant can last 20 years or longer, and in many cases a lifetime, when placed by an experienced clinician and properly maintained. The implant itself (titanium post) is designed to be long-term, while the attached crown or bridge may need replacement over time.
How long do dental implant crowns last?
- Ceramic crown or bridge: typically lasts 5–15 years
- Lifespan depends on the material used, bite forces, and how well you care for your teeth
What affects how long dental implants last?
Dental implants are both biological and mechanical, meaning their longevity can vary based on:
- Oral hygiene: Daily cleaning and regular professional maintenance
- Bone health: Changes in jawbone density over time
- Bite forces: Grinding or clenching can increase wear
- Smoking and health factors: Can impact healing and long-term success
- Clinician experience: Careful planning and precise placement are critical
What is the success rate of dental implants?
Dental implants have been extensively studied and show a high long-term success rate of around 95% to 98% over many years in healthy, non-smoking patients.
Do dental implants need to be replaced?
- Implant (titanium post): Designed to last decades or longer
- Crown or bridge: May need replacement after 5–15 years due to normal wear
Some patients may require earlier replacement depending on individual factors.
How can you make dental implants last longer?
- Maintain good oral hygiene at home
- Attend regular check-ups and professional cleans
- Follow your dentist’s aftercare advice
- Address issues like grinding early
Quick summary
- Dental implants can last 20+ years or longer

- Crowns and bridges typically last 5–15 years
- Long-term success depends on care, health, and maintenance

What is more important for my dental implant? A functional tooth or an aesthetic tooth, or both?
There are a variety of tooth materials that can be used to make a single tooth, known as a crown or row of teeth, known as a bridge. The tooth materials we use include:
- Custom-milled PMMA (acrylic)
- Zirconia
Tooth material is an important cost component when it comes to dental implants. A back tooth needs to be strong enough to withstand chewing cycles, while a front tooth will require a higher quality and aesthetically natural material.
Full mouth dental implants including All-on-4® are made of custom-milled PMMA (acrylic) as the first set of teeth after surgery. The replacement teeth are often made of zirconia.
-
Who is designing my new teeth?
Your new teeth are designed by a team that includes your dentist and an experienced dental technician. Together, they work to create teeth that are tailored to your facial features, smile, bite and functional requirements.
Depending on the type of treatment you are receiving, we may work with different laboratories that specialise in specific restorations:
- Senesi Laboratory is used for crowns, dental bridges, single dental implants and other small implant-supported restorations.
- Our in-house laboratory is used to design and manufacture full-arch custom-milled PMMA (acrylic) and zirconia bridges for All-on-4 and full-mouth dental implant treatments. This allows us to maintain full control over the quality, fit and aesthetics of your first and long-term bridges.
The design and fabrication of dental restorations is a highly skilled process that combines digital technology, technical expertise and artistic craftsmanship. The experience of the technician designing your teeth can influence factors such as aesthetics, fit, comfort and customisation.
At Perth Dental Implant Centre, we work closely with our laboratory teams throughout the design process to ensure your new teeth are customised to your individual needs and treatment goals.

What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a tiny titanium post (a biocompatible material) that fuses to the jaw bone though a process called osseointegration. The integrated implant then acts as an anchor to which your dentist can attach an abutment and crown or several abutments connected to a fixed implant bridge to replace several missing teeth or all missing teeth. Dental implants can last a very long time with good oral hygiene.

What are the risks with dental implant treatment?
Success rates for dental implant treatment in Australia is very high at 90-98%, according to the Australian Dental Association (ADA). Dental implant treatment completed overseas doesn’t always follow the same success and we often treat patients with failed implants. Read more about dental implants overseas. Dental implant treatment risks may include:
- Speech problems
- Gum tissue growth
- Infection
- Bone loss
- Loose implant
- Loose tooth
- Tooth problems
General surgical risks and specific risks to implant surgery also apply and are discussed with you prior to treatment. Careful planning and precision surgery by a suitably qualified dentist is essential to minimising any risks of surgery.
-
What dental implants do you use?
There are hundreds of dental implant manufacturers across the world which will differ in cost and quality. At Perth Dental Implant Centre, we can place any dental implant system that a client requests as long as it is approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Our implant pricing packages include single and small fixed dental implant bridges using ImplantDirect, Southern Implants and Sraumann Implants and full mouth dental implants (All-on-4®) using Nobel BioCare and Southern Implants. The type of dental implant system influences overall treatment costs because of the varying costs in individual components.
It’s important to understand that not all implant systems are licensed for use in Australia and may fail because of poor quality. Similarly, it can be difficult to treat complications resulting from implant systems that are difficult to source. Read more about dental implant treatment overseas here.

How long does it take to place a dental implant?
The time required to place a dental implant depends on the complexity of your treatment and the number of implants being placed.
For a single dental implant, surgery may take as little as 30–60 minutes. More complex procedures involving multiple implants, tooth extractions, bone grafting or full mouth dental implant treatment can take anywhere from one to four hours or longer.
While the implant surgery itself is often completed in a single appointment, the overall treatment timeline varies from patient to patient.
If a tooth needs to be removed, there are several possible approaches. In some cases, a dental implant can be placed immediately after the tooth is extracted. In others, it may be beneficial to allow the site to heal for several months before implant placement. Patients with significant bone loss may also require bone grafting, which can extend the treatment timeline.
The most appropriate approach depends on factors such as your oral health, bone quality, gum condition and treatment goals. Following a comprehensive assessment and 3D CBCT scan, your dentist will be able to explain your treatment options and provide a personalised timeline.
-
Will my implant treatment be complex?
The amount and quality of bone into which we can place a dental implant is different in each part of the mouth. For example, the bone at the front of the mouth can be much thinner which means a more complex treatment may be required to achieve a successful result.
Teeth at the front of the mouth may be much more visible when the patient smiles which can also make the treatment more complex. At the back of the mouth there may be more available bone and less need for an aesthetic outcome, making the treatment far simpler.
Following a 3D bone scan, we can fully assess your circumstances and come up with a unique treatment plan for the best possible results.
-
Can I get a temporary tooth while the dental implant heals?
Yes. There may be a period of time when we need to leave the dental implant to heal before we can create your permanent crown or bridge.
We’re able to provide you with a number of different temporary tooth options with different costs.
If you're having an immediate dental implant placed in the front of the mouth, it may be possible to place a crown at the same time, so you won't go without a tooth.
-
What is digitally guided implant surgery?
We use a new and minimally invasive technique to place dental implants , using computer guided 3D printed surgical guides. This allows us to place dental implants using a form of keyhole surgery, making the process much quicker, safer and less invasive. Watch our video on keyhole surgery to see how it works.
